A Must-Visit for Pastry Lovers: Usher's Bakehouse in Hoole, Chester

If you’re a fellow foodie constantly on the lookout for the next great pastry or sourdough loaf, Usher’s Bakehouse Hoole might just be your new obsession. Tucked away in the lovely neighbourhood of Hoole in Chester, this charming little bakery is a gem that’s already a firm favourite with locals…and now with me too! Whether you’re a  local or planning a fun trip to Chester, this bakery is well worth popping into.

Located at Deva House, Cestrian Court, Lightfoot St, Hoole, Chester CH2 3AD, Usher’s Bakehouse is open seven days a week and serves up a mouth-watering selection of freshly baked sourdough, pies, pastries, and sweet treats daily. And yes, they also do coffee, however I didn’t try any this time around.

Who’s Behind Usher’s Bakehouse?

Usher’s Bakehouse is a delicious project from Gary Usher, the man who is behind Elite Bistros, which includes the much-loved Sticky Walnut (which I reviewed recently—link at the bottom of the page).

You can really tell there’s a special touch involved in the little details, from the way flavours are balanced to how beautifully everything is presented. It’s artisan baking with flair and comfort all rolled into one flaky croissant or gooey brownie.

First Impressions

Usher’s Bakehouse isn’t huge inside, but it has a warm, welcoming vibe with super friendly staff. There’s a small seating area indoors and more space outside, but you can also take your goodies away, which is exactly what I did. Honestly, I’m a bit jealous of anyone who lives across the street…I’d be in there every single day!

Parking is also super convenient with lots of space nearby, so even if you’re driving in from Chester, Liverpool, or further afield, getting there is stress-free.

What I Tried (and Loved!)

Now onto the good stuff—what I ate! As someone who adores baked foods, I made sure to sample a few different things to give you a proper taste test. Spoiler alert: everything was incredible.

Raspberry Cheesecake Cruffin

To be honest, I have never actually tried a cruffin before. If you haven’t either, imagine the love child of a croissant and a muffin, filled with creamy, sweet goodness. Ushers’ raspberry cheesecake cruffin was absolutely delicious. The pastry was perfectly crumbly on the outside, with a sweet, cream cheese filling that gave it a proper “wow” factor. This one was a fun and indulgent treat, and I’d 100% get it again.

Jam Doughnut

As someone who is completely obsessed with doughnuts, I was so excited to try this. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint. Moist, pillowy, and packed with rich, tasty jam, this was my favourite item of the visit. It was sweet and had that classic doughnut magic that I’m just in love with.

Pain au Chocolat

I’ve had quite a lot of pain au chocolats in my time, and I’m not exaggerating when I say this one ranks among the best. The layers were buttery and flaky, and the chocolate was rich and perfectly melted, especially after I gave it a quick warm-up in the microwave at home. Total perfection.

Classic Sourdough Loaf

It wouldn’t be a proper bakery review without trying one of their breads, and I went for the classic sourdough. The crust had that satisfying crunch, while the inside was soft, springy, and full of that signature tangy sourdough flavour. This is the kind of bread you want on your Sunday brunch table, whether you’re making avocado toast or dipping it into soup… or super boring like me and using it to make a cheese sandwich!

Why Ushers Bakehouse Is Worth the Price Tag

The prices at Usher’s Bakehouse are a tiny bit on the higher side, but honestly, I think it’s more than justified. You’re paying for freshness, quality ingredients, and top-tier baking expertise. Each item feels like a proper treat, and the care that’s gone into crafting these goodies is very clear.

It’s the kind of place you go when you want to really enjoy your food, not just grab a bite on the go. Whether you’re treating yourself after a long week or picking up something special for brunch with friends, Ushers Bakehouse delivers the kind of experience you’ll want to repeat again and again.

Seasonal Flavours and Regular Surprises

One of the things I love most about Ushers Bakehouse is that they keep things exciting with regularly changing flavours. You never know what limited edition cookie or cruffin you might stumble across. It’s a great excuse to keep coming back and seeing what’s new.

From croissants to brownies, the menu has something for everyone…it’s always lovely to find somewhere that offers a range of options while keeping everything super tasty and indulgent.

Perfect for a Chester Day Out

If you’re planning a day out in Chester, a stop at Usher’s Bakehouse is a must. Whether you’re fuelling up for a walk along the city walls or just looking for a coffee and pastry pit stop before hitting the shops, this is the kind of bakery that adds a little magic to your day.
